Using your phone at work? You'd best encrypt your mobile data

Smartphones have become an integral part of our lives not just at home, but in the office as well. Keeping data encrypted is essential.

Smartphones have become commonplace in the modern office.

Nowadays, our mobile phones are pretty much taking over our lives. For many of us, they're the first thing we look at when we wake up in the morning and the last thing before we go to sleep at night. Even going a few minutes without looking at a small smartphone screen is torture for some.

Employees bringing their phones to work each day is a common phenomenon in this day and age.

It's not just in our personal lives where smartphones have become ubiquitous. We're even starting to use them at work as well - and while this is a good thing, helping to drive flexibility and productivity, it can also present security issues. It's wise to take proactive steps for protecting your data, not just at home but in the office as well.

Concerns amid the rising "BYOD" trend

Employees bringing their phones to work each day is a common phenomenon in this day and age - hence the increase in buzz about "bring your own device," or BYOD. This practice is one that's both wholly understandable and risky.

According to a mobile security study from the Information Security Community on LinkedIn, companies are citing numerous reasons for embracing BYOD in their operations. Among them are increased employee mobility (cited by 63 per cent of organization), worker satisfaction (56 per cent) and elevated productivity (55 per cent). There are also drawbacks, though. When asked to name their biggest pain point in BYOD, 42 per cent of organizations said data protection was the main issue.

Encrypting data is key

To prevent data security issues from putting a serious damper on office smartphone use, it makes sense for users and their employers to lean more on encryption as a security strategy. In short, this entails turning all the information on your phone into unreadable junk that no one can steal or spy upon.

This is easier to pull off with some phones than with others. On many iOS devices, the password protection mechanism makes it so encryption is basically built in, while on other phones, it's not so simple. Your security game plan will have to depend on the specifics of your device.

How our solution works

Encrypting mobile data might seem like a fairly complicated process, but at SafeSwiss, we have a strategy for making it relatively simple and easy.

Our solution begins with generating a unique key that no other device or user will share. From there, we use state-of-the-art elliptical curve cryptography to protect your data, ensuring that no one can access it without using your device's particular key. The system is foolproof, and you can rest assured that it will keep your mobile experience secure, whether you're at home or using your device around the office.
